Byron completed his specialist training in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in the United Kingdom in 2013, working in the Midlands and the Southwest. He was a respected Head of Department and popular Training Programme Director, having studied for a Master’s in Medical Education at the University of Warwick. Byron spent a year working at the Queen Elizabeth Liver Transplant Unit in Birmingham, alongside leading experts in the field of gastroenterology and liver disease.
He is well published having undertaken original research into Barrett’s oesophagus (a precursor to oesophageal cancer), irritable bowel syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease. He has received awards for his research at international conferences both in Europe and America. His particular subspecialty interests include endoscopy (specifically screening and surveillance for oesophageal and colon cancer) and inflammatory bowel disease.
He moved to New Zealand with his young family in 2020 to take up a specialist gastroenterologist role with Northland DHB. He has subsequently been appointed Clinical Lead for both the Bowel Screening Programme and the Endoscopy Unit.
