General and Endoscopic Surgeon
MBChB, FRACS
Barnaby Smith is a general, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeon with sub-specialist interest in bariatric (weight loss surgery), upper gastrointestinal conditions, melanoma, laparoscopy, and hernia repairs. He prefers to use minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy to improve the outcome for his patients.
After completing his Australasian Surgical Fellowship (FRACS), Barnaby worked at the Royal Marsden Hospital (London, UK) for 12 months as the Clinical Fellow in melanoma and surgical oncology. He then took up a Clinical Fellowship in upper gastrointestinal surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (UK), a highly respected teaching hospital. Here, he studied the endoscopic and surgical management of malignant and benign oesophageal and gastric conditions.
Barnaby went on to become an Observatory Fellow in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre (MSKCC, New York, USA).
Barnaby has been performing Bariatric surgery in the Bay of Plenty for 8 years. He has recently completed a Bariatric/ weight loss surgery sabbatical in Laparoscopic Gastric bypass and Gastric Sleeve. He has developed a Bariatric service with a “wrap-round”/ holistic approach to weight loss in Tauranga.
In addition, he performs over 200 endoscopies each year at Grace Hospital and East Bay Specialist Centre. All operations that require laparoscopy and an overnight stay are carried out at Grace Hospital.Having a special interest in the management of hernias, Barnaby has undertaken extensive research and study in this area, and recently published an article in Annals of Surgery (2016) on the topic of Inguinal Hernias.
Barnaby regularly attends international and New Zealand conferences, keeping his surgical knowledge and techniques up to date. When it is possible, he includes laparoscopic and other minimally invasive techniques in his management of surgical conditions, as they reduce the time it takes his patients to recover from surgery. He also encourages his patients to participate in making decisions about their treatment.
Born and raised in the Bay of Plenty, Barnaby lives in Tauranga with his wife and two young children. He is a keen trout fisherman, and also regularly competes in marathon and trail running events.
