Most people get enough iron from eating a healthy, balanced diet. However, sometimes you may require extra iron and this can be given as a tablet, or in some cases as an infusion.
An iron infusion is an administered through an IV or injection over a period of time depending on your needs. This can be from 15 minutes to a few hours. Iron is essential for the body to make red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our body, when our red blood cell count is low (also known as anaemia) this is what can cause tiredness or dizziness.
Prior to your procedure being scheduled your doctor will have gone over any medical history, allergies and medication being taken (including herbal or over the counter)
You do not need to fast for an iron infusion so no need to skip breakfast or lunch, you can take your regular medication as long as these are known to your doctor.
The iron will be administered intravenously (into the vein via a needle) either on the top of your hand or elbow. Your weight may need to be taken to calculate your iron dose.
Depending on your needs this procedure could take anything from 1 hour to a couple of hours, your doctor will advice how long your infusion will last. If at anytime throughout your infusion you feel unwell, please alert our staff.
Your doctor may require a post-procedure blood test to monitor your haemoglobin levels.
